Question by : How do you install a laminate countertop?
I’ve built up a half wall (42 inches) for a bar countertop. I bought an 18 inches wide laminate countertop with 3/4 inch drop on edges and would like to know what i should do for buildup underneath the countertop to secure to half wall. Please provide all tools/items necessary to complete this task. Also provide clear step-by-step instructions on how to do this.

Measure the width of the recess in the laminate (the space between the edgings). Cut a piece of 1/2″ plywood the width minus 1/2″ or so and screw it securely to the top of the wall. Set your top over the plywood and screw through the plywood into the bottom of the countertop. 1-1/4″ screws should work well. Run some near the wall, as well as out towards the edge. Hope this helps.

Question by Ryan P: If my quartz countertop comes cracked, should I refuse installation?
I’m getting my countertop today installed in my kitchen. The slab around the sink isn’t too big and there are no corners. I’ve seen stories on HGTV of installers accidentally cracking it around the thinners areas around the sink.

If his happens today, and it gets cracked during installation or from delivery, should I refuse it and demand a new piece? Thanks.

Yes, once it’s in then they’ll demand payment. Most contractors should be good about it and if they aren’t they may be trying to rip you off.

Granite is an extremely hard and durable stone, but it can be scratched. If the scratches are very deep, the only way to remove them is by abrasion – grinding them away. The idea of grinding your beautiful granite countertops might be frightening, and if you’re not comfortable with your own capabilities in this area, it might be wise to hire a professional. Trying to save a few dollars is a commendable effort, but if it ends up costing the replacement of your countertop, it’s hardly worth it. The problem is that grinding removes a layer of the stone. The new layer could be different in color by a few shades from the surrounding surface.

But, if the scratches aren’t quite so deep, there’s an alternative method for removing them, one that isn’t quite so “abrasive.” You can spray on a special crystal solution and use a buffing pad to put it to work removing the scratches. The buffing process requires some time and effort. You have to apply the crystal solution to the whole countertop and buff the entire surface, as well, to avoid the problem of color difference. And you shouldn’t apply extra buffing to the scratches. Instead, the buffing should be even over the whole countertop. This is much more easily done with an electric orbital buffer.

The crystal solution that you spray on the countertop should be the right one for the job. These solutions come in a variety of formulations, from coarse to fine. If the scratches are minor, you can probably use a finer formulation. It’s best to start out finer and work your way to coarser if the finer formulation doesn’t seem to be doing the trick. Once the countertop is free of scratches, you should apply a granite polish and a granite sealer. These products will bring out the luster of the stone and help protect it from stains.

Polishing granite countertops is only one part of maintaining them so they always look their best. They should also be cleaned frequently and sealed every six months to a year. Cleaning granite countertops can be accomplished using homemade solutions or a granite cleaner that you have purchased. Granite is sensitive to some chemicals and should never be exposed to highly acidic or alkaline compounds. You should avoid using most household cleaners on granite unless they specifically state that they are intended for that use. Anti-bacterial sprays are okay.

The best alternative to the usual home cleaning products, especially if you haven’t the time to mix up a homemade formula, is to purchase granite cleaner. It will be specially designed to clean the stone thoroughly without causing any damage.
